    Description

Only one available. The first combined pictures shot was done to show the etched wording better for this famous battle that was fought 100 years ago this year in 1916. This WWI 1 world war one Battle of Verdun artillery shell trench art piece and World War I dated artillery shell 1914-18 is an exceptional piece. This piece of trench war art was made by a veteran of the great war in the trenches and not only commemorates this greatest of all known battles (VERDUN) in bold capital letters but also dates the "Great War" years, which is extremely rare to see both. This trench art mentions both of these WWI significant events and dates and is decorated with etched leafs, flowers and recessed brass work. The Battle of Verdun is considered the greatest and lengthiest in world history. Never before or since has there been such a lengthy battle, involving so many men, situated on such a tiny piece of land. The battle, which lasted from 21 February 1916 until 19 December 1916 caused over an estimated 700,000 casualties (dead, wounded and missing). The battlefield was not even a square ten kilometres. From a strategic point of view there can be no justification for these atrocious losses. The battle degenerated into a matter of prestige of two nations literally for the sake of fighting. There is only this one shell from my personal collection that I am selling. I also own a transatlantic telegraph cable (two) from Europe to America stating that Germany has surrenders and that the Kaiser has retreated to his quarters. If you are interested in these two telegrams, they are 5 for both. This piece is 13 3/8 inches long by 3 3/8 inches wide.
