Description
Standard Oil Company, founded by John D. Rockefeller in 1870, became the largest oil refinery and distributor in the world by the late 19th century. It played a pivotal role in shaping the modern petroleum industry through its innovations in refining, distribution, and marketing. The company's monopoly and business practices led to its breakup in 1911 by the U.S. Supreme Court under antitrust laws, resulting in the creation of several smaller companies such as: Standard Oil of New Jersey (later known as Exxon), Standard Oil of New York (later known as Mobil), Standard Oil of California (later known as Chevron), Standard Oil of Indiana (later known as Amoco), and Standard Oil of Ohio (later known as Sohio). These companies, along with others that emerged from the breakup, continued to exist and thrive, eventually merging and evolving into some of the largest and most influential oil companies in the world.
