This lot is for four Dartmouth College posters for their Winter Carnival.  The year 1999 has the dog, the second 2000 is a line from Dartmouth's alma mater, the woman might refer to the school as a female or is an anniversary of the admittance to women, the 2001 is a futuristic modern buildings and the 2001 Odyssey is a reference to Kubrick's movie 2001 Space Odyssey and 2002 obviously shows Dorothy on the yellow brick road on her way to the campus I assume instead of OZ.  I think that this one is the most traditional because is shows snow and the skis.  Many of these posters have shown snow events, ice sculptures but the variety is amazing through the decades.   These are all collectors' items, some, not these are worth many hundreds of dollars apiece.  If you or your children or friends, or nieces and nephews went to Dartmouth this might be a great gift, or if you like to collect college traditional posters because the Dartmouth Winter Carnival is certainly one of the most famous, certainly the Rose Bowl and other college events are as well known, but I am not sure if they ever had posters.
The tradition of a winter carnival at Dartmouth goes back to 1910 when the Outing Club organized what they cited as a field day that was held in the winter with skiing as the emphasis.  In 1911 the club held a second field day and the they called it the Winter Carnival.  The event is held in February at the campus in New Hampshire.  Dartmouth is an Ivy League School and the event continues to now, about 110 years after the first one.  Some of the events through the years have been skiing, building huge snowmen, creating ice sculptures, human dogsled races, concerts, dances, polar bear swims, and the banned keg jumping, and watching the winter "Winter Carnival," that is about a former queen who wants to warn her sister who also is the carnival queen to avoid a relationship with a rogue.   This is the oldest college winter celebration in the country according to wikipedia.  In the earlier years, the school was all men and special trains were run to transport women to the campus to engage in the winter fun and attend the fraternity parties.  In 1972 Dartmouth went coed.   National Geographic
